Patagonia II: The adventure goes on: El Chubut

Image
Chubut is one of the Argentinean provinces that are in Patagonia and is characterized by its rugged coastline and endless plateau covering most of it. Although one might think that there is scarce life there, it offers the possibility to observe a lot of animals in its natural environment. The Valdez Peninsula is  located 77 km from "Puerto Madryn" and it is a touristic place. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This place is exceptional to watch different types of animals, one of the most prominent is the southern humpback whale (Eubalaena Australis) that is in danger of extinction. This whale is slow and when dead its carcase stays on the water. That's why hunting it was very easy and convenient. Now, they are protected in the area and its characteristics allow to watch them from a short distance and if lucky, you can see its tail, which is an emblem of the province. A whale attacked by a seagull. Seagulls infringe them serious wounds. The great

Patagonia: The end of the Earth

Patagonia is a large Andean region in the southernmost part of South America that covers parts of Chile and Argentina. Its name comes from the word "patagón" (in Portuguese big foot) used by Magellan to describe the native people of the region. They were tall people (over 5'11", 1.80 m) with big feet and this is possibly the reason why Magellan took the name. Due to its climate and location this region has preserved its ecosystem and we can still enjoy amazing sights and wildlife. Between the animals that can be seen, we find whales, rodents, birds, rheas and camelids like the guanaco's. One of the typical features of this area is the quantity and dimension of lakes of glacial origins. This is the reason why several European have chosen this place to settle because of its similarity to the Alpine region. Charles Darwin in his famous trip to this region studied the guanaco, found fossils of large animals and possibly got all the knowledge to develop later t

Fascinating Mountains!

Image
There is an old saying about mountains: "To those who have struggled with them, the mountain reveals beauties that they will never forget". Indeed, it does not matter where the mountains are, they are always fascinating and aside of the aesthetic aspect, they show the power of our creator. Nahuel Huapi National Park, Hotel Llau Llau View and Pañuelo Port, Bariloche - Argentina Mountains flirting with clouds - Chapare, Cochabamba - Bolivia Although it is not the same as to be on the site, a virtual trip can show us their wonders and also we can take the chance to learn some details about them. Mountains are formed by slow movements of the earth crust. There are 5 types of mountains: 1) Folded mountains are formed when when two plates collide and their edges crumbled, much the same way as a piece of paper folds when pushed together. This is the most common type. Illimani Mountain, in its skirts is located the city of La Paz - Bolivia. It is a typical example of a

Forest Burnings: Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Image
Perhaps some have read this novel written by García Márquez, which describes a murder and details of this killing. The same is happening with our beloved Amazonian forests and the worst problem is that this death may extend not only to animals and plants but all of us. "Ipias" Hills burning - September 2011 The Amazon, before becoming a victim of human settlements, had no time of the year with burnings like now. Since man came up with the "bright idea" to transform forest lands for grazing and agriculture by burnings, this has not stopped. What is not known is that this action diminishes the rainfall and what was once a rainforest, becomes an arid and dry plain. As an example we can mention all the Chaco's Zone (south east of Bolivia, part of Paraguay and northern Argentina) that was previously rain forest and is now a semi-dessert with scarce vegetation and water problems due to old burnings, long time ago. The Spanish name "chaco" is transl
