Patagonia III: Bariloche, the Alps of South America

Panoramic view of Nahuel Huapi Lake including the famous Llao-Llao Hotel at the center (Click in the picture to enlarge view).

This is a city located in the province of Rio Negro, Argentina, in the mountainous part of the Patagonia, close to the Nahuel Huapi Lake and surrounded by the Nahuel Huapi National Park. This place is a touristic place for skiing, trekking and mountaineering. The city itself reminds the typical Swiss town and this is not casual, because this region has many European immigrants.

This photo seems taken in a typical town in Switzerland, but it was taken in the main square of San Carlos de Bariloche.

If you like to see wonderful landscapes, this is the place. You will find many spots very close to our concept of paradise. And the good thing is that this place offers its beauty at any time of the year. Winter for skiing and summer for other activities like fishing, trekking, etc.

The Nahuel Huapi National Park is the oldest and largest park of the region. The region close to the Andes is humid, with many lakes, rapid rivers, water falls, snow-clad peaks surrounded by large forests.

At a certain height, the snow appears in all the surrounding mountains in the Andes.

A detail of the special peaks in the mountains.

One of the most beautiful views of the surrounding lakes is from Cerro Campanario. You can reach the summit  by ski-lift, by bus or hiking.

Other beautiful route is "Circuito Chico". It is a route around the lakes. It can be hiked or biked.

Cerro Otto is another beautiful spot to view the entire Bariloche area. You can go thee by cable car and the amazing view will start during the trip.

Bosque de Arrayanes. It is an amazing forest with special orange colored trees that grow in an island in the middle of Victoria Lake. There are special cruises that may be taken in the port in front of the Llao-Llao Hotel (a luxury hotel in the middle of the park).

Retama sphaerocarpa. It blooms in Summer and gives a special color to all landscapes.

The combination of greens with the snow in the heights is awsome.

Wherever you go, you find beautiful sight seeings.
If you are planning to visit South America, consider to visit the Patagonia. Few zones in the world have so many natural wonders. We have just shown a small part of it. I hope you have enjoyed it. This ends the series related to this part of the world.
